This module focuses on the rich, Africa-derived music and culture brought to the West Coast by African-Americans coming from the Southern United States, which went on to have a global impact through blues, funk, and hip-hop music.

This module focuses on the unique musical contributions of Chinese immigrants to the City of San Francisco and touches on the importance of the Chinese railroad workers to the state’s transportation infrastructure.

United Farm Workers

Music was a crucial part of the farm workers movement. This module, which illuminates both Mexican-American and Filipino-American contributions to the movement, focuses on the work of the movement’s “house songwriter” Agustín Lira and how the power of music continues to help propel social change.

WWII Japanese Incarceration

This module, anchored by teaching artist Shirley Muramoto, takes a deep dive into the experience of the tens of thousands of Japanese-Americans who were incarcerated under Executive Order 9066. More than 500 distinct tribes lived and thrived in the area now called California, prior to European contact and colonization. This module, anchored by the Ohlone Sisters, focuses on the music traditions of the Ohlone, the Native people of the Northern California coast. A Sonic Tapestry: Indian Music in California

This module explores the powerful impact and influence of Indian music on California musicians and cultural practitioners. It is led by Dr. Rohan Krishnamurthy and Jim Santi Owen, two musicians/teaching artists who have devoted their lives to this music, as well as several special guest artists.
